Part of the mosque suffered damage during Metro construction in the Esplanade area in the 1980s that led to protests and formation of the Tipu Sultan Shahi Masjid Protection & Welfare Committee. The Metro Railway authorities agreed to demolish the damaged part of the mosque and rebuild it. An identical mosque, which was later built by the Waqf committee is at Tollygunge at the cross section of the Anwar Shah Road and was named after Prince Gulam Mohammad.
