Syed Abdullah Shah Qadri popularly known as Bulleh Shah was a Mughal era Punjabi Islamic philosopher, Sufi poet and humanist whose ancestors migrated from Bukhara in modern Uzbekistan to Punjab in current Pakistan. The verse form Bulleh Shah primarily employed is called the Kafi, a style of Punjabi, Sindhi and Siraiki poetry used not only by the Sufis of Sindh and Punjab, but also by Sikh gurus. His popularity stretches uniformly across Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims, to the point that much of the written material about this philosopher is from Hindu and Sikh authors. Films, music bands and individual artists have used Shah’s poetry in modern times to spread the message of harmony and peace.
