The official version released by the Japanese authorities — and still endorsed by the Indian government considers the ashes preserved in a small golden pagoda in Renkoji temple to be that of Bose after he succumbed to his injuries post an air crash in Tokyo, though in recent years the authenticity of this version has been challenged. Despite the controversies, as Indian diplomats, government officials and tourists continue to visit Renkoji to pay homage to the greatest War Hero of India, it thrives symbolically as a historical connect between the two nations.
