Mysuru Dasara is the state-festival of Karnataka. It is a 10-day festival, commencing with Navaratri (connoting nine-nights) the last day (tenth-day) being Vijayadashami (symbolic of the victory of good over evil in myriad incarnations depending on the specific region within the Indian subcontinent). The festival is observed on the tenth day in the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin, which usually falls in the Gregorian months of September and October. The city of Mysuru has a long tradition of celebrating the Dasara festival with splendor and majesty. The Dasara festival in Mysuru completed 408 years in 2018. Though there are indications that the festivities were observed in Karnataka since the times of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 15th century.
