Banbasa is a census town in Champawat district of Uttarakhand, popular as a border town between Nepal and India as Mahendranagar in Nepal is only 5 kms from the town. There is an immigration office in Banbasa for both the countries thus easing trans-border passage. Rickshaws, horse-drawn carts, tutktuks ply continuously to ease traffic between the two neighbouring countries. Since 2014, the Banabasa Bridge at Mahakali River in Nepal built through government initiative has been opened for seven hours daily to general population and businessmen of both Nepal and India thus encouraging regular interaction between the neighbours.Though Nepalese and Indian nationals are allowed to cross Banbasa unrestricted, there are customs requirements for goods and third country nationals.
