Bhot Bagan Math, situated in the Howrah district of West Bengal, was the first Tibetan Buddhist Temple in the plains of India. The temple was consecrated in June, 1776. The word “Bhot”, used in ancient India to refer to Tibetans, “Bagan” in Bengali means garden, and “Math” is Bengali for monastery. Bhot Bagan therefore, would mean Tibetan Garden, and that is what this was originally meant to be.
