Recognized as a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO, commissioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and constructed under the guidance of architect of Ustad Ahmad Lahauri, the ivory mausoleum of Taj Mahal is an ode to love. The dual tombs of Shah Jahan and his queen Mumtaz in whose memory this was conceived, are the centre pieces of this unique Persian architecture. Rabindranath Tagore has immortalized Taj and their love in his celebrated poem “Taj Mahal” by comparing it with a pearl tear drop that would forever glisten on the cheeks of time.
