Agra and Taj Mahal- a 17th century architectural marvel are synonymous with each other. Agra, a historical city in Western Uttar Pradesh situated on the Indi-Gangetic Plain was founded by Sultan Sikandar of the Lodhi Dynasty in early 16th century to be the capital of the Delhi Sultanate. The city site however predates the Sultani era, its early references being in Mahabharata where it is referred to as an “Agravana” and in Ptolemy’s accounts.
